Massive Ring Event Schedule for Roma Show

ROMA SHOW - 6-8 MAY 2010

Ring events at this year’s 2010 Roma Show are set to be revamped with the appointment of Carla Cosgrove as chief horse steward for the first time.  Ms Cosgrove said the position for ring events was vacant this year and she was keen to lift the standard of the event schedule to be equal or better than other large regional shows around the state.

“I’m really excited about the number of participants we can attract this year, it should be a massive year for the ring events schedule in Roma”, Ms Cosgrove said.  “There are lots of new events on the program coupled with good prizes for local and regional riders which should help attract larger numbers to this year’s show.”

Ms Cosgrove said for the first time there will be a Stockman’s Challenge which is sponsored by Fleming’s Welding Service.  “The major prize for the challenge will be a four day double pass and accommodation (sponsored by Equitana Melbourne & Hotel Enterprize) to this year’s Equitana and Western Spectacular in Melbourne with return flights from Brisbane to Melbourne”, she said.

“The Stockman’s Challenge runs over three rounds and aims to demonstrate how versatile stock horses can be in the ring.  Three events will be run in the challenge including hack, working patterns and time trials.  The hack classes show how supple and obedient the horse is, the working classes show the ability of a horse to manoeuvre at all paces with control and obedience.  The time trial is a test of the horse’s ability and tractability against the clock.”

Ms Cosgrove said another first for this year’s show will be the addition of a show hunter program sponsored by the Australian Hunter Horse Association.

Hunter Horses are usually native European breeds and derive their name from foxhunt horses back in the 1500s.  “Hunter horse are typically breeds that are sufficiently conditioned to compete on traditional all day fox hunts or working style horses for example,” she said.

Competition in this category is relatively new to Queensland but it gives riders with this type of horse an opportunity to ride exclusively in the class for the first time at the show.

Other ring events for this year include District Hacks, Led Bred Classes, Adult Rider, Hack Classes, Beginner Ring, Dressage and Show jumping.

For more information on the Roma Show Horse Section please call Carla Cosgrove 0n 07 4622 6839 or email horsesectionRSS@bigpond.com

Pre-nominations for the ring events must be received in the Roma Show office before Friday 30 April 2010 and accompanied by payment, disclaimer and swabbing form.

You are able to nominate on the day (except for the challenge event) at a slightly higher entry fee.

A full copy of the riding schedule can be downloaded from the Roma Show Society website www.romashow.com.au

The Naming of Roma - The Lady Roma Bowen Connection

Lady Bowen, formerly Contessa Diamantina Roma, was the wife of Queensland’s inaugural Governor, Sir George Bowen.  She was a compassionate and conscientious figure, whose elegance, serenity and charm endeared her to all Queenslanders.

Born in 1833 on Zakynthos in the Ionian Islands off Greece, Diamantina was the tenth of 11 children for Count Giorgio-Candiano Roma and his wife.  Given the family’s privilege and influence, she enjoyed a happy and comfortable early life with access to education and high culture.

Diamantina married English scholar Sir George Bowen at Corfu in 1856, just two years before he was appointed as Queensland’s first Governor.  After a long voyage from Greece, the Bowens arrived in Queensland in 1859 on a hot and dusty December day.  Upon arrival, Sir George declared Queensland a separate State to the many joyous Queenslanders lining the banks of the Brisbane River, thus commencing his popular tenure as Governor.

Lady Bowen devoted herself to working tirelessly for those in the community.  Despite her background of aristocracy and great wealth, she was a gracious and natural advocate for the under privileged, the injured and the infirm.

After her family and community work, Lady Bowen’s great love was gardening.  In her honour a brilliantly-hued creeper that she lovingly cultivated in the grounds of Government House during her husband’s term, is now commonly known as ‘Lady Bowen’s Creeper’.  Fittingly, the shrub’s Latin name bignonia venusta translates to mean charming, lovely and graceful.  This dramatic and vigorous evergreen climber has South American origins and thrives in full sun with little water - perfect for the Queensland climate.

Many places and landmarks across Australia bear testament to Lady Diamantina Roma Bowen:  Roma Parklands (Brisbane); Roma Street (Brisbane); Town of Roma; Diamantina River (Northern Qld); Diamantina Shire (Qld); Diamantina Falls (VIC); Diamantina Street (ACT); Diamantina Hospital; Lady Bowen Park (Brisbane); HMAS Diamantina (Riverclass frigate); the Diamantina Trench (a deep ocean cleft off WA); Lady Bowen’s Wreck (off Mission Beach in far north Queensland).

Q150 Steam Train is coming!

Train enthusiasts, young and old, will be treated to a rare and spectacular sight at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 19th August as the Q150 Steam Train pulls into Roma. As part of the 150 year anniversary celebrations, the Q150 train has already visited much of Queensland and is now on the last leg of a 5 month journey. train-at-roma-st1

The train will steam into Roma amid community celebrations, which includes music on the platform by the local PCAP music students, horse and wagon rides, a display of magnificently restored vintage cars, and a performance by a local Indigenous Dance Group. Draped in appropriate period costume, the members of the Roma Performing Arts will bring a touch of nostalgia to the festivities, which will include a Welcome to Country by a representative of the  Mandandanji local indigenous community and the Mayor of Maranoa Regional Council, Cr Robert Loughnan. Having travelled the Chinchilla to Roma leg of the journey, a student from Chinchilla will share a message of Good Will with the community of Roma. This free event will run from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, with food, drinks and coffee available.

A novel experience awaits many of the school children of the Maranoa region, as they will ride the loco when it departs at 3.15pm on a short local trip to Blythdale and back. A very limited number of tickets will also be available on the day from the Roma Tourism tent, in front of the Railway Station.

The action will quickly move to the Roma Cultural Centre where a family Bush Dance will kick off at 5.30pm. This fun-filled night of toe-tapping entertainment will feature the popular and eternal “Bullamakanka”. Having recently celebrated 30 years in the industry, this band will be ready to roll out many of their boot scooting favourites, which has brought them 6 Gold Guitar Awards at Tamworth. Entry to this alcohol free event is free, and food and drinks will be available for a small fee.

The next day, quieter celebrations commencing at 9.00am including a morning tea and a Farewell ceremony are planned for the departure of the train, next morning.
